Another Great City Meet
The Parkshore Piranhas closed out the 2008 City Meet with another fine performance on Relay Night. The Piranhas finished in third place at 2463.5 points while Snee Farm (2863 points) and Coosaw Creek (2853.5 points) duked it out for the championship, Snee Farm's twentieth straight.
Thirteen of fifteen Parkshore relays swam faster than their entry times, particularly the 7-8 girls free relay (Laura Key, Gordon Brockington, Helen Beischel, and Elizabeth Moseley), who improved their time by nearly eight seconds on their way to a third place finish. The highest-placing Piranha relay was the 15-18 boys free relay (Andrew Dash, Michael Reynolds, Andrew Watson, and Matthew Hughes), who finished in second place. These boys were especially proud of their finish, since they were the first Piranha relay team to surpass Snee Farm in this event (Snee Farm's signature race), in over fifteen years. The 11-12 girls free relay (Shannon Daly, Laurin Jones, Meridith McKenzie, and Meredith Lackey) set a new team record of 2:10.08.
The Piranha girls finished in second place behind Coosaw Creek for the overall girls team championship, and the 9-10 girls finished as age group runners-up behind Daniel Island.
We hope to see our usual great turnout for our annual season-ending awards party on Thursday night, July 24. The pool will close to everyone except swim team families at 5:00 and will be open for swimming until 6:00. Food will be served at 6:00, and the awards will begin at 7:00.

Parkshore had 17 top-10 finishes on Day 2, led by the night's only event champion, Katie Lesemann, who finished first in the 13-14 girls backstroke and individual medley and second in butterfly. Andrew Watson also finished second in the 15-18 boys breaststroke, followed by Matthew Hughes in fifth place. Lizzie Daly placed fourth in the 15-18 girls backstroke.

Piranhas Open up City Meet in Third Place
The 2008 CCAA Championship meet began on Sunday, July 20, and the Parkshore Piranhas finished the first night of competition in third place. Coosaw Creek leads the way with 977 points, followed by Snee Farm with 940 points and Parkshore with 927.5 points.. The Piranhas have a 105 point lead over fourth place Daniel Island (822.5 points)
Piranha swimmers captured two event championships on the first night. Meredith Lackey finished in first place in the 11-12 girls freestyle, while Bennett Otten won the 7-8 boys backstroke. Emma Gourdie set a new team record in the 9-10 girls 50 backstroke while finishing in second place. Emma also finished in second place in freestyle and the IM. Meredith Lackey finished in second place in the 11-12 girls IM and in third place in the backstroke. Shannon Daly placed second in the 11-12 girls butterfly and breaststroke. Laura Key finished in third place in the 7-8 girls freestyle. In all, 22 Piranha swims resulted in top 10 finishes.
The Outstanding Swim of the Meet awards for the first day of the City Meet go to:
Bennett Otten: Bennett may be the first swimmer in CCAA history to win an event in the City Meet without ever having previously swum it in a meet! Bennett had never swum backstroke in a meet before, and just qualified for the City Meet in backstroke by swimming it in a time trial at practice on the morning that City Meet entries were due. Bennett was also seeded eleventh in backstroke going into the City Meet.
Gordon Brockington: Gordon beat her personal best time in the 7-8 girls breaststroke by nearly two seconds, and moved up from 19th place in the seedings to a 10th place finish.
Emma Gourdie: Emma improved her time in all of her events (9-10 girls freestyle, breaststroke, and IM) on Sunday night, finishing second each time. In the individual medley, she beat her best time by almost four seconds.
Laura Key: Laura opened up the meet for Parkshore with a fantastic swim, placing third in the 7-8 girls freestyle after being ranked tenth going into the race. She beat her best time by almost a second and a half and had one of the ten fastest times in the event in Parkshore City Meet history. Not bad for someone in her first year of swim team!
All in all, the Piranhas had a nice start to the 2008 City Meet.. Let's see if the older swimmers can swim as well on Monday night!

Piranhas Pull Away on Relays to Defeat Killer Whales

With the victory over the previously unbeaten Killer Whales, the Piranhas improve to 3-1 on the season and 2-1 in the Red League heading into next week's meets: Monday at Dunes West and Tuesday at Hobcaw.

Upcoming Events for the Piranhas
- On Wednesday (June 25) after afternoon practice, join the Piranhas at Five Guys Burgers and Fries on Savannah Highway.
- On Thursday (June 26), we will take the team picture on the tennis court behind Parkshore pool at 5:15. Swimmers should wear their team T-shirts. We will then drive or walk over to our meet against our friendly neighborhood rivals from Northbridge Terrace.
- The deadline for the City Meet T-shirt design contest is approaching quickly. Designs should be given to Katie Kulp by Thursday. The rules for the contest can be found here.
Outstanding Swims of the Meet (Snee Farm, June 19)
We award one swimmer in each practice group with the Outstanding Swim of the Meet Award. This is based on the quality of the swim, not on the place ribbon earned. Here are the award winners for the Snee Farm meet.

Snee Farm Was Just Too Strong
The 2007 Red League regular season co-champions faced off at Parkshore Pool on June 19, but Snee Farm proved to be too strong and deep for the Piranhas, triumphing by a score of 300½-236½. The meet was exciting and loud and featured many fast swims by both teams. Parkshore will hope to rebound against our friendly neighborhood rivals, the Northbridge Terrace Killer Whales, on Thursday, June 26 after a bye on June 24.
Bowling with the Piranhas
Join the Piranhas on Wednesday, June 18, at Ashley Lanes (map), located at 1568 Sam Rittenberg Boulevard, starting at 2:00 PM. The cost of $4.50 covers shoe rental and two games. This fee needs to be paid to the cashier at the bowling center. Ashley Lanes also has a snack bar - the cost of food and drink is separate. You are advised to wear socks. We hope to see a great turnout!
Rained Out at Dunes West
After attempting to wait out some stormy weather, Parkshore and Dunes West decided at 8:30 on June 17 to reschedule the meet to Monday, June 30. The rescheduled meet will still be at Dunes West. A new page will be added to the meet absence binder for the June 30 meet - please mark any absences for that date in the binder as soon as possible. A new lineup will be drawn up for the rescheduled meet, since different swimmers will be absent on that date.
We will have regular morning practice from 7:30 until 8:45 on Wednesday, June 18.
Outstanding Swims of the Meet (Shadowmoss, June 12)

The Sharks held the lead after freestyle, but impressive efforts in butterfly and breaststroke, followed by wins in 9 out of 10 freestyle relays, led to a very solid finish. The Piranhas had a successful meet across the age groups and had many personal best times. Parkshore's next meet is a trip to Dunes West on Tuesday, June 17.

Piranhas Open 2008 Season with 299-227 Victory over Brickyard
The 2008 Parkshore dual meet season began on a good note on June 10 with a win over a much-improved Brickyard Barracudas team. Brickyard broke out to an early lead by winning the first two medley relays and held on to the lead through the freestyle races. The meet was close through the butterfly and backstroke events before Parkshore pulled ahead by a relatively comfortable margin in the breaststroke. Many new swimmers did quite well in their first dual meet for the Piranhas, who will host the Shadowmoss Sharks on June 12.
Piranhas Prepare to Host the Barracudas
The 2008 dual meet season will begin on Tuesday, June 10, when the Brickyard Barracudas visit Parkshore. This is an out-of-league meet that will not count toward the Red League's regular season standings, since Brickyard competes in the White League. All swimmers are asked to be at the pool by 5:45 PM ready to warm up, and the meet will begin at 7:00 PM.
A few notes about dual meets:
- Swimmers should wear their new team t-shirts to the meet.
- 6 & under and 7-8 swimmers should remain in their designated area until they have completed all of their swims. This will make it easier for the lineup parents to get the swimmers where they need to be.
- 9-10 swimmers will also have parents organizing them before their events. These swimmers need to keep track of the flow of the meet and must be able to hear the lineup parents calling them.
- As is the case with many other teams in our swim association, the Parkshore coaching staff asks that swimmers not come to the pool for free swim on the day of a meet.
- Swimmers should be sure to stay hydrated during a meet, and should drink before they feel thirsty. Water is the best drink, along with sports drinks. Soda can have a negative impact on swimmers' performance.
- Many swimmers eat a small pre-meet meal in the mid-late afternoon to carry them through the meet. A light meal with carbohydrates and protein but not a lot of fat often does the trick. Many swimmers also bring fruit or snacks that are low in sugar and salt with them to a meet.
- Parents should remember that the start and finish areas are for swimmers, coaches, timers, and meet officials only. Cheering, filming and greeting swimmers must not be done in these areas. Also, please be sure to keep the poolside area clear for the meet referees.
- Parking Director Frank Shorter reminds parents: If you are dropping your swimmers off at a home meet, but are not parking, please let your swimmers out at the end of the cul-de-sac on Battlesea Road instead of pulling in to the gravel driveway. The front right gate to the pool will be open in addition to the main gate. Please come up the driveway only if you are planning to park and stay. This will help relieve traffic congestion outside the pool.
Pizza with the Piranhas

Intrasquad Practice Meet Goes down to the Wire!
The Parkshore Piranhas' annual intrasquad practice meet went very well on Saturday, June 7. New parents and swimmers got a chance to experience a dual meet before the regular season starts. The outcome of the meet came down to the final relay, which helped the whole team by simulating a close, exciting meet. In the end, Coach Edward and Coach Abby's team won the meet by six points when their 13-18 boys' relay team edged out Coach Erik's relay. Congratulations to all swimmers who participated!
Congratulations to Our Newly Graduated Coaches!
Please congratulate assistant coaches Jessica Simons and Abby Zisk on their recent graduations. Jessica graduated from the University of Florida in early May and will begin working at the Roper Hospital emergency room soon. Abby graduated from Porter-Gaud on May 24, and will attend Duke University in the fall.
First Meet Is Two Weeks Away!
Swim practices continue to go well as we enter the last two weeks before dual meets start. The Piranhas will begin the regular season with a home meet against the Brickyard Barracudas on Tuesday, June 10.
We will prepare for this meet and the rest of the season with our annual intra-squad practice meet on the morning of Saturday, June 7. Warmups for the practice meet will begin at 8:30 AM, and the meet will begin at 9:00. All swimmers on the team are welcome to participate, and new swimmers and parents are especially encouraged to attend.
Morning practices will begin on Monday, June 2, from 7:30-8:45.. Swimmers in the 5:00 and 6:00 afternoon practice groups are welcome to attend morning practices. There will probably be more room in each lane than there is in the afternoon, and there is less of a chance of morning practices being disrupted by weather. More information about morning practices can be found on the team information page.
Swim Team Season Arrives!
Practice for the 2008 Parkshore Piranhas season began on Wednesday, April 30. The practice schedule is available here.
The first week of practice went well, although we were a little chilly. We welcomed many new faces and many returning Piranhas. The sun is the only heater that our pool has, so the sunny days coming up in early May, as well as the not-so-cold nights, will help the water warm up nicely.
Dual Meet Schedule Released
The dual meet schedule for the 2008 CCAA season has been released. Parkshore's dual meet schedule is available here. The regular season will open with an out-of-league home meet against the Brickyard Barracudas on Tuesday, June 10. The most anticipated dual meet is the annual matchup against 19-time defending CCAA champion Snee Farm, who defeated the Piranhas by a finger's length on the last relay of the dual meet last season. Snee Farm will travel to Parkshore on Thursday, June 19. The regular season will end on July 10, and the City Meet will take place July 20-22.
