2007 Season News

A Great Season!

The Parkshore Piranhas end-of-the season party took place on Thursday, July 19. A complete list of award winners is coming soon! Download the season summary here.

Piranhas Come to Swim on Relay Night!

The Parkshore Piranhas closed out a great 2007 City Meet with an outstanding performance on Relay Night, ending up in second place behind Snee Farm for the fifth consecutive season. This year's City Meet was the closest since the CCAA established a new scoring system in 2000. Snee Farm finished with 2865 points, while Parkshore set a new team record of 2709 points, only 156 points behind. Snee Farm had won the previous six City Meets by over 400 points each year. Dunes West finished third with 2335 points, just ahead of Coosaw Creek at 2328.5 points. Parkshore's girls rolled to the overall girls team championship, defeating Coosaw Creek by 122 points, while Parkshore's boys finished as runners-up to Snee Farm.

The Piranhas finished the night with 12 top ten relay finishes in 15 events, including three relay champions. The 7-8 mixed medley relay team of Peyton Wilson, Joe Riddell, Madison Lackey, and Thomas Hoefer started the session with a bang, dropping their time by a whopping 6 seconds to beat a 9-year-old CCAA record (which was previously held by Parkshore.) All four members of that relay team finished in the top five of their stroke in the individual events, including three event champions. The 9-10 mixed medley relay followed with a championship of their own; the relay team members were Jack Kulp, Lucas Windham, Anna Kassis, and Hannah Gourdie. Anna and Hannah, along with Delaney Stone and Emma Gourdie, won the 9-10 girls freestyle relay, the third straight year that Parkshore has won that event. Parkshore's 15-18 free relay team of Lizzie Daly, Alicia Corbin, Cara Prystowsky, and Janice Hartley set a new team record as they finished in third place behind two CCAA record-breaking relays from Northbridge and Dunes West.

The Piranhas won overall City Meet age group championships in the 7-8 girls and 9-10 girls age groups, and finished as runners-up in the 15-18 boys age group.

We hope to see our usual great turnout for our annual season-ending awards party on Thursday night, July 19. The pool will be open for swimming until 6:45, food will be served at 6:00, and the awards will begin at 7:00.

Piranhas Swim Well, but Snee Farm Pulls Ahead

On the second day of the 2007 CCAA Championship Meet, the Parkshore Piranhas turned in another strong performance, but it was not enough to hold off a hard-charging Snee Farm team, who moved into first place with 2124 points. Parkshore is second at 1995 points, 129 points behind Snee Farm, but 254 points ahead of third place Dunes West.

Parkshore finished the night with 28 top-10 finishes out of 50 swims, but Snee Farm's 39 top-10 finishes gave them a decided edge on Monday night. Matthew Hughes won his second career City Meet championship, winning the 13-14 boys breaststroke. That was followed by second-place finishes by Janice Hartley and Andrew Watson in the 15-18 girls and boys breaststroke events.

The 2007 City Meet will conclude with Relay Night on Tuesday. Many Parkshore relays are seeded very highly, and another terrific night is expected. The team record for City Meet points (2609½ points, set in 2003) is well within reach.

Piranhas Lead the Way!

The 2007 CCAA Championship meet began on Sunday, July 15, and the Parkshore Piranhas sit in first place after a fantastic first day of competition. The Piranhas scored 993 points during the first night and hold a 38½ point lead over eighteen-time defending City Meet champion Snee Farm. This is a 113 point improvement over last year's first night total of 880 points, and a huge improvement over the 908 points that Parkshore was seeded to score.

Piranha swimmers captured seven event championships on the first night. Hannah Gourdie was one of two CCAA swimmers to capture a triple crown by winning three events (the 9-10 girls freestyle, breaststroke, and individual medley.) Parkshore finished first in four out of five 9-10 girls events, as Anna Kassis won the butterfly in that age group. In the 7-8 boys age group, Thomas Hoefer finished as the champion of the freestyle, while Joe Riddell added a first place in breaststroke. Madison Lackey also captured the 7-8 girls butterfly title. In all, 28 Piranha swims resulted in top 10 finishes.

There were two Parkshore team records set on Sunday night. Mary Stewart Wilson, in her first year as a Piranha, broke Cami Sink's team record in the 7-8 girls 25 breaststroke. Joe Riddell broke Coach Edward Ball's team record in the 7-8 boys 25 breaststroke, narrowly missing the 21-year-old city record. Joe's time of 22.09 was the second fastest in CCAA history in that event.

The Outstanding Swim of the Meet awards for the first day of the City Meet go to:
Thomas Hoefer: one of two swimmers seeded fifth to win an event (7-8 boys freestyle) on the City Meet's first day, Thomas dropped his time by a second and a half. Thomas also dropped over 3 seconds from his backstroke time to earn a second place finish.

Ellinor Walters: Ellinor posted one of the night's biggest improvements by a Parkshore swimmer, beating her time in the 11-12 girls backstroke by over 2 seconds on her way to a 13th place finish, up from her seed of 24th place.

Joe Riddell: Joe's goal all season has been to win the 7-8 boys breaststroke in the City Meet, to break the team record in that event, and to challenge the CCAA record. He matched all three of those goals!

Overall, it was an amazingly good night for Parkshore. Let's see if the older swimmers can swim as well on Monday night!

Regular Season Wraps up with a Victory over Longpoint

On July 3, the Piranhas closed out a very successful season with an out-of-league victory over the Longpoint Sailfish, 362-169. Parkshore finished the regular season with a record of 7-1, the team's fourth seven-win season since moving to the Red League to stay in 1992. The highlight of the meet was the showdown between identical twin coaches Michael Mulé of Parkshore and his brother Millard, the head coach of Longpoint. The brothers dueled in an individual medley race, which was won in a close finish by Coach Michael.

All Parkshore swimmers should be proud of their contributions to the team's outstanding season. The spirit showed by swimmers and parents alike made this a tremendously enjoyable season all around. Congratulations go out again to our graduating seniors: Edward Ball (13 years as a Piranha), Brandon Cole (13 years), Alicia Corbin (12 years), Joseph Fox (8 years), Janice Hartley (9 years), Cara Prystowsky (13 years), and JP Shorter (13 years.) This special group meant a lot to the team both in and out of the water, and their contributions will really be missed. The Shorter and Ball families have had children swimming for Parkshore for almost 20 years, with the Prystowsky, Cole, and Fox kids not far behind. For these five families, their seniors are their youngest swimmers, and we thank those families for all they have done for the team.

Red League Co-Champions! Piranhas Slip Past Dunes West

The Parkshore Piranhas finished as at least the co-champions of the Red League in the regular season on June 26 by defeating Dunes West, 275-262. Our terrific senior swimmers helped pave the way as the Piranhas won both the 15-18 girls and boys freestyle relays. Parkshore was trailing by one point going into the free relays, making it necessary to win six of ten relays to win the meet. If Dunes West had won one more relay, they would have won the meet by a point.

The coaching staff congratulates each and every team member for their contributions to this season's success. Once again, the team spirit from swimmers and families was tremendous throughout this meet, and helped to give the team the energy boost that was needed to claim a championship. If Snee Farm defeats Brickyard on Thursday, they will also finish as co-champions.

The Outstanding Swim of the Meet Awards will be presented on Wednesday afternoon, and will be posted on this page sometime Wednesday night.

Parkshore’s lineup for the City Meet is due in to the swim league on July 6. The lineup will be read at morning practice on Saturday, July 7. As with most other teams, we will enter the strongest lineup possible, and there are no exhibition swims in the City Meet. Swimmers not entered in the City Meet are welcome to keep practicing after our last dual meet, but they are not required to practice. Practice for the 4:30 group will end after our last dual meet.

Piranhas Take Over First Place with Win over Killer Whales

On June 21, Parkshore defeated their friendly rivals, the Northbridge Terrace Killer Whales, by a score of 317-220 and moved into sole possession of first place in the CCAA's Red League with one meet to go in the Red League race. The Parkshore coaching staff was very surprised by the margin of victory, especially considering Northbridge's near miss against Snee Farm in their last meet. The Piranhas closed out the meet by winning the final eight freestyle relays, for a season record of 43-17 in free relays to go along with a record of 25-5 in mixed medley relays. The unprecedented relay success this season is a tribute to our overall team effort. Parkshore's next meet will be on Tuesday, June 26, at home against Dunes West.

Piranhas Win Third Straight Meet, 340-196

On June 19, the Parkshore Piranhas won for the third straight time, defeating the Shadowmoss Sharks 340-196. This was once again a meet that featured contributions by the entire team. The Piranhas now head into the toughest back-to-back stretch of the season as we travel to Northbridge Terrace on Thursday, followed by a home meet against Dunes West on Tuesday. The Red League standings are still very tight, and could have been even tighter had Northbridge pulled out their meet against Snee Farm - the Killer Whales lost 270-266, the same score as the Parkshore-Snee Farm meet.

Piranhas Come to Swim, and Nearly Knock off the Champs

On June 7, the Parkshore Piranhas gave Snee Farm everything they could handle and more, and almost ended the defending Red League and CCAA champions' dual meet winning streak at 43 meets. The Piranhas jumped out to an early lead, winning four of five medley relays, and led for nearly the entire meet. Parkshore needed to win five of ten freestyle relays to clinch the victory, but came up one short, losing the meet 270-266. No meet in recent memory has featured so many close finishes.

Because of their recent dominance, Snee Farm rarely faces any other team's best lineup. In this meet, both teams went all-out for the win, and Parkshore gave Snee Farm the stiffest competition they have faced in five years. Our team has a lot to be proud of after this meet, and can use it as a stepping stone to build on for success for the rest of this season. The excitement and team spirit displayed by swimmers and parents alike was amazing.

Piranhas Defeat Hobcaw, 361-176

On June 5, the Parkshore Piranhas opened the 2007 season with a strong performance, defeating the Hobcaw Marlins 361-176. The meet seemed to last forever, due to the size of the two teams and a lengthy weather delay, but both teams were glad to get the meet in. The Parkshore coaching staff appreciates the dedication of swimmers and parents in their willingness to wait out the weather.

The meet was a strong all-around performance by the Piranhas, especially by our many new swimmers. We hope to come back on Thursday with another great meet against the CCAA champions, Snee Farm.

Bowling with the Piranhas

We will have our first outing of the year on Wednesday, June 6. We have lanes reserved at Ashley Lanes (map), located at 1568 Sam Rittenberg Boulevard, starting at 2:00 PM. The cost of $5.50 covers shoe rental and two games. This charge needs to be paid to the cashier at the bowling center. Ashley Lanes also has a snack bar - the cost of food and drink is separate. We hope to see a great turnout!

Annual Intrasquad Meet to Open Season on June 2

The Parkshore Piranhas will hold our annual intrasquad meet on Saturday, June 2. Warmups will begin at 8:30 AM and the meet will start at 9:00. The Piranhas have been divided into two teams. Coach Erik's team will face off against the team led by Coaches Michael and Edward. Hopefully, we will stay dry and will have another exciting meet like last year's, which came down to the final relay.

The intrasquad meet will be followed by our 5th annual barbecue. As always, Burrell Dosher will be cooking a pig, which will be accompanied by chicken, hot dogs, baked beans, cole slaw, iced tea, and lemonade. The cost is $6.50 per plate, or $3.50 for children aged 10 and under. Ice cream sundaes will be available for $1.00 starting at 1:00 PM.

Morning Practice Begins

Now that school is out for many of the Piranhas, morning practice will begin on Friday, June 1. This practice is open to all swimmers from the 5:00 and 6:00 groups, and runs from 7:30-8:45 on non-meet days.

On meet days, the 5:00 group will have morning practice from 7:30-8:00, followed by a team meeting until 8:15. The 6:00 group will have practice after the team meeting, from 8:15 until 8:45.

There will be no morning practice on Wednesdays of weeks with two meets (all Wednesdays in June.) If a Tuesday meet is cancelled due to weather, we will have practice on Wednesday morning.
