2006 Season News
"Best of the Rest" for the Fourth Straight Season
The 2006 swim season finished up on July 18, as the Parkshore Piranhas wound up in second place in the CCAA Championship for the fourth consecutive year. On the final day of competition, Piranha relays finished in the top 3 in 6 of 15 events to end up with 2546½ points, about 500 points behind 18-time champions Snee Farm, and 224 points ahead of the third place Coosaw Creek Crocodiles.
Two Parkshore relays won CCAA championships: the 9-10 girls free relay of Hannah Gourdie, Anna Kassis, Shannon Daly, and Meredith Lackey, and the 15-18 girls free relay team of Abby Zisk, Lizzie Daly, Alicia Corbin, and Janice Hartley. These two relays both earned Outstanding Swim of the Meet Awards. The 9-10 relay won the award for finishing only about a second away from the CCAA record, breaking the team record, and becoming the second fastest 9-10 girls relay in CCAA history. The 15-18 girls relay earned the award for breaking the team record and becoming the sixth fastest 15-18 girls relay in CCAA history. Another Outstanding Swim award was earned by Thomas Hoefer for swimming a 25 freestyle split on the 8 and under boys free relay that beat his best time by two seconds.
We hope to see our usual great turnout for our annual season-ending awards party on Thursday night. The pool will be open for swimming until 6:45, food will be served at 6:00, and the awards will begin at 7:00.

Piranhas Jump to 2nd Place on 2nd Day
In the second session of the 2006 CCAA Championship Meet, the Parkshore Piranhas leapfrogged past the Coosaw Creek Crocodiles and into second place in the team standings with one night of competition to go. After the second session, Parkshore has scored 1850½ points, which trails first place Snee Farm by 341 points. Coosaw Creek sits in third place with 1696½ points.
Piranha swimmers won four more individual events on Day Two. Lindsey Olson led the way with a new CCAA record in the 15-18 girls 50 butterfly, and also won the 100 individual medley. The butterfly record is Lindsey's sixth CCAA record, the most of any swimmer. She has at least one CCAA record in each age group, from 8 and under through 15-18. Her butterfly and freestyle swims were both Parkshore team records, giving her thirteen Parkshore bests. Her IM championship was her eighth consecutive CCAA title in that event, dating back to 1999, when she won the 9-10 girls IM as an eight-year-old. Helen Olmi won the 13-14 girls butterfly, her second straight championship in that event, while Andrew Watson overcame a hand injury to win his first City Meet championship in the 13-14 boys breaststroke. Twenty-six of the night's 50 swims resulted in top 10 finishes for Parkshore, for a total of 50 top 10's for the meet.
Lindsey Olson won the first Outstanding Swim of the Meet award for her record-breaking performance in the butterfly. Helen Olmi took home an Outstanding Swim of the Meet award for her butterfly championship, the only event winner in the entire City Meet who did not swim in the fastest heat. Andrew Watson earned an Outstanding Swim of the Meet award for his outstanding breaststroke victory after doing nothing but kicking for most of the previous week's practices due to his hand injury. Michael Reynolds had an award-winning performance in the 13-14 boys 100 individual medley, topping his previous best time by three seconds to move from a 22nd seed to an 11th place finish.
Overall, a fantastic team effort kept Parkshore in the hunt for a team record for most points in a City Meet (2609½ points, set in 2003.) Piranha swimmers scored 108 points more than they were seeded to score, among the team's best performances ever. The City Meet will conclude on Tuesday, July 18, with Relay Night. This is traditionally Parkshore's night to shine.

Piranhas Open City Meet in 3rd Place
The 2006 CCAA Championship meet began on Sunday, July 16, and the day's competition closed with the Parkshore Piranhas in 3rd place with 880 points, just behind Coosaw Creek (889½). Snee Farm is in the lead with 1009½ points.
Piranha swimmers captured three event championships on the first night. Meredith Lackey won the 9-10 girls 50 freestyle, and Brent Demarest finished first in the 9-10 boys 50 butterfly and 50 backstroke. Meredith had the only team record swim of the night, breaking her own Parkshore record in the 50 backstroke. In all, 24 Piranha swims resulted in top 10 finishes.
There were many contenders for the Outstanding Swim of the Meet Award for Sunday's events. The first Outstanding Swim of the Meet belonged to Elizabeth Walters, who opened the meet for Parkshore by finishing in 2nd place in the 8 and under girls 25 freestyle out of the next-to-last heat, after being seeded 11th. Another award was won by Anna Hall Reynolds, who stepped in at the last moment to replace a sick teammate in the 9-10 girls 50 butterfly. Anna Hall beat her best time by 5 seconds, and finished in 8th place, the same place that her ill teammate was seeded to finish. The final Award went to Joe Riddell in the 8 and under boys 25 breaststroke. Joe took 3 seconds off of his time, and moved up from a 19th seed to finish in 6th place.
Overall, it was a very good night for Parkshore. The Piranhas exceeded their projected score by 50 points, aiding in Parkshore's bid to claim a fourth consecutive "Best of the Rest" finish as the City Meet runner-up.

Piranhas Head to City Meet
The Parkshore Piranhas, who have finished as runners-up in the last three CCAA Championship Meets, are looking forward to another great City Meet in 2006. The meet will be held Sunday, July 16, through Tuesday, July 18, at the Jewish Community Center.
In 2005, the Piranhas finished in second place with 2552 points as Snee Farm won their seventeenth consecutive CCAA championship with 3120.5 points. Northbridge Terrace finished in third place with 2101.5 points. This year, all of the Red League teams should see fierce competition for the top five places in the City Meet.
Piranha swimmers are reminded that morning practice on the three days of the meet will be from 9:00-10:00 AM. We will have a 20 minute warmup at Parkshore Pool each afternoon before heading over to the JCC for our warmup there.

Piranhas Defeat Sailfish to Wrap Up the Regular Season
The Parkshore Piranhas wound up the 2006 regular season on July 6 by defeating the Longpoint Sailfish 307-229 in an out-of-league meet. Longpoint, who finished in a second-place tie in the White League, gave the Piranhas a challenge before Parkshore pulled away in the individual medleys and freestyle relays. Despite predictions from earlier in the day of thunderstorms, the meet barely received any rain, and the Piranhas were able to avoid having to reschedule the meet.
Parkshore will finish up the year by sending 55 to 60 swimmers to the CCAA Championship meet, to be held July 16-18 at the Jewish Community Center.
Outstanding Swims of the Meet (Northbridge Terrace, June 29)

Piranhas Survive Tough Meet with Killer Whales, Finish Second in Red League
The Parkshore Piranhas closed out the Red League portion of the schedule with a hard-fought win over the Northbridge Terrace Killer Whales, 289-248. With the victory, Parkshore clinches a share of second place in the Red League, finishing in a tie with Coosaw Creek. This is the third straight season that Parkshore has earned at least a share of the Red League runner-up trophy. Northbridge led by as much as 17 points before Parkshore pulled away in the breaststroke events. Piranha swimmers should be very proud of their efforts so far this season, but should be ready to continue to work hard as the City Meet approaches.

Piranhas Top Barracudas, 332-205
In a meet that finished in record time, the Parkshore Piranhas ran their season record to 4-2 (3-2 in the Red League) with a 332-205 victory over the Brickyard Barracudas. The win, coupled with an upset of Dunes West by Shadowmoss, moved the Piranhas into a second place tie with Coosaw Creek. A victory by Parkshore over the Northbridge Killer Whales in the next meet can wrap up a share of the regular season second place trophy for the Piranhas. Parkshore can finish in second place alone if the Piranhas win and if Dunes West wins on Thursday against Coosaw Creek and then loses to Snee Farm on July 11.
| Team | Wins | Losses |

| Snee Farm | 5 | 0 |
| Parkshore | 4 | 2 |
| Coosaw Creek | 4 | 2 |
| Dunes West | 3 | 2 |
| Northbridge Terrace | 3 | 3 |
| Shadowmoss | 3 | 4 |
| Brickyard | 2 | 4 |
Parkshore's margin of victory came primarily from the relays, winning 13 out of 15, and from the backstroke events, where the Piranhas outscored Brickyard 65-25.
It's a Busy Week for the Piranhas!
Besides meets with Brickyard and Northbridge, we have a lot of things going on this week:
- Don't forget the canned food drive (see details below)
- Join the team at CiCi's Pizza after Wednesday afternoon's practice. Wear your team t-shirt! The team will receive 10% of the proceeds.
- The team picture will be taken before Thursday's meet against Northbridge. Be at our pool at 5:15, so the picture can be taken at 5:30. We will head over to Northbridge right afterwards (but we won't parade over this year - sorry!)
- The Parkshore Pool Swimathon will take the place of Friday morning's practice. Team members can swim any time between 7:30 and 10:00. Swimmers in the 4:30 group are encouraged to swim for 30 minutes or an hour. Swimmers in the 5:00 group and 6:00 group are encouraged to swim for at least an hour. We will need adult help to count laps. Prizes will be awarded to swimmers that collect the most pledges. We hope to use the proceeds to buy a portable lifeguard stand.
Piranhas and Killer Whales Team Up to Fight Hunger
The Parkshore Piranhas and the Northbridge Terrace Killer Whales are rivals in the pool, but to show community spirit and camaraderie, the teams will team up for a canned food drive leading up to the June 29 Parkshore-Northbridge swim meet. If every swimmer from both teams brings in at least one canned food item, we will have nearly 300 cans! Please bring in at least one can of food next Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. We will displaythe results of our generosity at the meet, and will donate the food to theSt. Vincent DePaul Society of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Let’s show what our teamscan do when we worktogether!

Honorable mentions for the Outstanding Swim of the Meet Award: Sarah Margaret Miles (6 & under girls 25 free), Robby Gourdie (6 & under boys 25 free), Daniel Kassis (6 & under boys 25 free), Madison Lackey (7-8 girls 25 fly), Kara Schwacke (7-8 girls 25 free), 7-8 girls free relay (Emma Gourdie, Emma DeMuth, Stafford Mullin, Madison Lackey), Julius Cale (7-8 boys 25 free), Ethan McAlpin (7-8 boys 25 back), Zander Read (7-8 boys 25 free), Emily Ball (9-10 girls 50 free), Barry Goodwin (9-10 boys 50 free), Henley Ball (11-12 girls 50 breaststroke), Nathaniel Hardy (11-12 boys 50 free), Brittany Corbin (13-14 girls 50 fly), Becky Kumar (13-14 girls 50 breaststroke), Henry Mullin (13-14 boys 50 backstroke), Jacob Zionce (13-14 boys 50 breaststroke), 15-18 girls free relay (Abby Zisk, Lizzie Daly, Alicia Corbin, and Janice Hartley).
Piranhas Stay Close to Snee Farm, but Come up Short
Parkshore and Snee Farm renewed their rivalry on Thursday, June 22, with a meet that was pretty close for a while, before Snee Farm pulled away on the IM's and free relays to win, 299-238. After Snee Farm opened the meet by winning all five medley relays for a 35-0 lead, things didn't look good for the Piranhas. At the end of butterfly, Snee Farm led by 53 points. However, Parkshore made quite a run in backstroke and breaststroke, beating Snee Farm in those two strokes, 115-65. As usual, though, Snee Farm proved incredibly tough in the IM's and free relays and coasted to the victory. Parkshore swimmers can be very proud of a meet that was much closer than last season's 169 point loss.

Piranhas Swim Late, but Escape the Crocodiles
Parkshore and Coosaw Creek swam another classic nail-biter on June 20 at Parkshore pool, with both teams waiting out almost an hour of storm delay before the Piranhas wrapped up a 277-260 victory. Parkshore won four of five medley relays to jump out to a 28-7 lead, but Coosaw Creek soon caught up, and led through most of the freestyle, butterfly, and backstroke events. The Piranhas finally took the lead again in the 15-18 boys breaststroke event and went into the free relays needing to win 5 out of 10 relays to clinch the meet. Parkshore won the first four relays, but Coosaw Creek won the next four to give Parkshore a 3 point lead with two relays to swim. Both of the Piranhas' 15-18 free relays won, giving Parkshore a 17 point win. Coosaw Creek never fails to provide a tough challenge for Parkshore, and this year was no different. It took an all-around team effort to hold off the Crocodiles. A five-team tie for second place last week in the Red League has now turned into a tie between Parkshore and Dunes West, with Coosaw Creek close behind:
| Team | Wins | Losses |
|---|---|---|
| Snee Farm | 3 | 0 |
| Dunes West | 3 | 1 |
| Parkshore | 3 | 1 |
| Coosaw Creek | 3 | 2 |
| Northbridge Terrace | 2 | 2 |
| Brickyard | 2 | 2 |
| Shadowmoss | 2 | 3 |
Check back on Wednesday night for the Outstanding Swims of the Meet for the Coosaw Creek meet, and then it's on to Mount Pleasant for a visit to the CCAA champions, Snee Farm, on Thursday.

Piranhas Come up Short Against Dunes West
In a very exciting meet that came down to the last few freestyle relays, the Parkshore Piranhas suffered their first loss of the 2006 season, 283-254, on June 15 at Dunes West. The Swordfish provided very stiff competition for the Piranhas, and built up a lead after the individual medley events that was too much for Parkshore to overcome. The Parkshore coaching staff is very proud of the way the team rallied around the freestyle relay swimmers and provided a big lift as the Piranhas made a great comeback. After trailing by 50 points after the 15-18 girls' 100 IM, Parkshore closed the gap to 15 points by winning 5 of the first 6 free relays. Unfortunately, Dunes West was able to hold off the Piranhas to pick up their first Red League victory in team history.

Parkshore 336, Shadowmoss 201
In the Red League opener for both teams, the Parkshore Piranhas pulled away from the Shadowmoss Sharks early, and swam very well to earn a 336-201 victory. Former Parkshore swimmer and coach Brad Blake brought a very spirited Shadowmoss team to his old pool and gave Parkshore a very strong challenge in a meet that was closer than the score indicated. The Piranha coaching staff is very proud of the team for its great show of team spirit, fast swims, and the second straight meet with no disqualifications. Parkshore had a strong all-around meet, especially in winning 10 of 15 relays, many of them very close.
Since we don't have another meet until we face Dunes West on Thursday, please take advantage of practice time as much as possible until then. This is a great opportunity for us to work on areas that need improvement, and the coaches can't do that for swimmers who aren't there!

Piranhas Defeat Porpoises in the Season Opener
In the opening meet of the 2006 season, Parkshore swam an impressive meet and won at Pine Forest, 360-172. It was a very solid, all-around team performance. An especially exciting fact about the meet is that the Piranhas met Coach Erik's goal of reducing the number of disqualifications. In fact, there were no disqualifications at all. It was also good to swim against former Parkshore swimmer and coach Rob Olson in his debut as the coach of the Porpoises, and to see one of his assistant coaches (and brother), Nick. Our next meet will be Thursday, June 8, at home against Shadowmoss.
Bowling with the Piranhas
We will have our first outing of the year on Wednesday, June 7. We have lanes reserved at Ashley Lanes (map), located at 1568 Sam Rittenberg Boulevard, from 2:00-4:00 PM. The cost of $5.50 covers shoe rental and two games. This charge needs to be paid to the cashier at the bowling center. Ashley Lanes also has a snack bar - the cost of food and drink is separate. We hope to see a great turnout!
The Intrasquad Meet Was a Nail-Biter!
Our annual intrasquad meet took place on Saturday, June 3. Ninety-two Piranhas participated in the meet, which gives new swimmers and parents a chance to experience what a meet is like before the CCAA season actually starts. The meet came down to a one second difference in the final relay, as Coach Erik's team held off Coach Nichole's team, 206-192. The 13-18 boys' relay teams closed out the meet with a neck-and-neck duel won by Coach Erik's team. There were great swims in all age groups, and our many new Piranhas did extremely well! Thanks to all of the parent volunteers for helping the meet to run smoothly.
