The Parkshore Piranhas

The Parkshore Piranhas are a summer swim team for swimmers up to age 18 that competes in the Coastal Carolina Aquatic Association (CCAA) in the Charleston, South Carolina, area. Our swimmers achieve success in the pool while developing sportsmanship, teamwork skills and goal-setting, and most importantly, having a lot of fun.

The Piranhas have been one of the most successful teams in the CCAA for much of their 25-plus year history. In the 2008 season, Parkshore finished in third place in the CCAA Championship meet. Three Parkshore swimmers finished in first place in four different individual events in the 2008 CCAA Championship Meet. In addition, Piranha swimmers hold CCAA league records in nine individual events and five relay events.

Parkshore's New Coach

The Parkshore Pool's Board is pleased to announce that Lucy Polley will be the new head coach of the Piranhas for the 2009 season. Lucy comes to us with extensive coaching experience, having been an assistant and head coach. She has swum and coached in the CCAA for the Wild Dunes Dolphins and was the head coach there in 2006 and 2007. She earned honors at the New England Prep School Championship and NEWMAC Conference Championship. She was a top 10 finisher in almost all events in her career at the CCAA Championship Meet. In addition to coaching and swimming competitively, she has given swimming lessons for some time, something she hopes to continue at Parkshore. Lucy is an Art History Major from Mt. Holyoke College. As we enter our 30th season, we look forward to the coaching of Lucy Polley to continue those traits we so value at Parkshore.

Great job at time trials everyone!  I would like to thank all of the parent volunteers and congratulate all the swimmers on their hard work.  We had a great turn out this year.  Keep up the hard work!

I want to remind everyone that we have our intra-squad meet this Saturday, June 6th at 9 AM.  Be sure to arrive by 8:20 for 8:30 AM warm-ups.  This is a great experience for the swimmers and parents to familiarize themselves with the way a meet works.  It is also a lot of fun!  We will need parent volunteers again to make this meet the best it can be.

The Piranhas practice and compete at the Parkshore Swim and Racquet Club in the West Ashley area of Charleston (map). Practice for the 2009 season will begin in late April or early May.

A Successful 2008 Season

In 2008, Parkshore had another great season, finishing with a dual meet record of 5-2 and a third place finish in the Red League in the regular season. The Piranhas then finished in third place in the CCAA Championship Meet, behind 20-time defending champion Snee Farm as well as Coosaw Creek. Three Parkshore swimmers (Bennett Otten, Meredith Lackey, and Katie Lesemann) placed first in a total of four individual events in the City Meet.

The prestigious Coaches' Cup awards for 2008 were presented to Meredith Lackey and Anna Penninger for their dedication, hard work, and enthusiasm. The Anne Lamble Team Spirit Award was given to Matthew Johnson.

The Coaching Philosophy of the Parkshore Piranhas Staff:
We intend to provide instruction, motivation, challenges and fun in a sport that can be enjoyed for a lifetime. We try to teach not only swimming skills, but also skills such as teamwork, self-discipline and goal setting. We strive to maintain a balance between participation and team success. We realize that winning is not the most important thing; however, personal and team success can be incredible motivators. We try to help swimmers set individual goals, and to set new ones when those goals are reached. We encourage each swimmer to view every practice or meet as a chance to become a better swimmer than the day before.
